Following our article on RAF Airacobras in the last issue, Michael Gibson has sent in these photos of AH582. While carrying out aerobatics in UF-N, PO P N Hewitt lost control and dived into the yard behind Gwynne Street Chapel, Bedford. Despite the confined area, the crash seems to have done little damage; even the dunnies have survived intact although any occupants would have had a severe shock!

Peter Berry recently had occasion to visit Robert McGill who had worked at the Harland & Wolfe buildings at Greenock which were used by Scottish Aviation to overhaul flying boats during World War Two. He has laser-copied some of the photos from his album.
The Catalina in the hangar is Vingtor III, KK-B of No. 333 Squadron. Serial appears to be JX224. There is some damage being repaired to the nose and a Norwegian flag aft of the cockpit.

AM269 afloat off Greenock is a No.240 Squadron Catalina I. It has no ASV aerials on the wings so was probably taken at an early date. It does have a seagull on the leading edge but this is not thought to be part of the operational equipment for finding submarines.

The Sunderland in front of the hangars cannot be identified but gives a good impression of the beaching gear. This was only used when winching the boat up a slipway although on one memorable occasion, a Sunderland was taxied at Pembroke Dock on its beaching trolley.
It has ASV aerials near the wingtips.
