  • This strangely-coded He 111H-20 paratroop transport was present at the German Aircraft Exhibition at Farnborough in November 1945. W/n 701152 was originally coded NT+SL and was intended for shipment to the USA, but shipping space was at a premium and it was flown from Cherbourg to Boxted by the 56th Fighter Group.
It received the 56th code 'HV with the combination of W (for Major Williamson, CO of the 62nd Fighter Squadron, 'C for Major Carter, CO of the 61st Fighter Squadron and 'O' for Capt Ordway, Engineering Officer of the 61st.
It carried USAAF stars but on arrival at Farnborough these were replaced by roundels, leaving the bars intact. Selected for museum use, it was moved around until it eventually found a home at the Battle of Britain Museum, Hendon.

  • Two of the three Horsas that landed on the morning of D-Day to capture the bridge over the Orne canal, now known as Pegasus Bridge. The end of the bridge is just visible beyond the rear Horsa and on the left is the Cafe Gondree, famously the first house in France to be liberated. It now has competition from a modern cafe across the road called 'Les Trois Planeurs' but Arlette Gondree, who was in the cellar when the gliders arrived, is still in charge!

  • An eccentric piece of coding appears on this Oxford I of No. 104 Flying Refresher School. The serial has been reversed and painted in large digits in normal code fashion.
Was this form of coding adopted by other units or had someone misread the instructions on placing large serials on the fuselage that were issued in the late 1940s to provide easy identification?

  • A Martin B-26 Marauder in France at the end of the war. The code '35' has obliterated most of the serial which seems to be in the '45-' batch. The Free French Cross of Lorraine appears on the nose but there is no armament fitted.

  • Регистрационный номер: J8420

One of those 'what-is-happening here' photos via Dennis Thompson. The fuselage is from Gamecock J8420 and still has No.23 Squadron's badge on the fin. But what is the engine installed and what was it used for? The photo dates from January 1935 and originally came from Mr. Reg Reid of Leith.
