Charles Lindbergh with his Ryan NYP NX211 "Spirit of St. Louis". The long range fuel tanks were in front of the pilot and with no windscreen his only forward view was by a periscope.

In this photo only the G- can be seen as the remainder of the incorrect registration has been touched out on the original. On the aircraft itself of course only the last letter had to be repainted as the others were all correct.

Flown by Lindbergh with the cockpit open, apart from the tandem seating the Mohawk shows its very similar features to the 200 hp Miles Falcon Six.

Aerobatic exponent Neville Browning at Broxbourne with the Mohawk in late 1948 or early 1949. The sliding hoods have been removed leaving the Mohawk with open cockpits, a la Magister.

Neville Browning holding the propeller shows it to be a variable pitch type, but no record has been found of the period during which this was fitted to the Mohawk.

Standard Miles feature is the untapered tailplane with trim tab on the port elevator, but no wing folding as the joints are sealed with fabric strip.

Not apparent from the angle of this early photo is the fact that an incorrect registration, G-AEKN, has been applied, an embarrassing error that was quickly corrected

Entirely imaginary conversation: Lindbergh: Why doesn't it have a Hamilton variable pitch propeller? George Miles: Well you could have one, but it is heavier and with tail ballast would reduce fuel contents and range.

Postwar and with registration prominently displayed, the Mohawk carries race No.3 for the 1947 Folkestone Trophy Race. No doubt fitted by the RAF is a navigation light behind the cockpit cover.

The Mohawk was given the same tandem seating and sliding hood arrangement as Lindbergh's Sirius but all its design features were unmistakably Miles.

The tandem seating arrangement gave the Mohawk a narrow fuselage in head-on view, unique among the later Miles passenger cabin aircraft which all had side-by-side seating.

Work in progress on the Mohawk in the USA in 1984 indicated that a complete rebuild was necessary and many parts were missing, so that its reappearance with the RAF Museum in original Lindbergh colours as planned may still be some way off.

Except for the side-by-side seating the Whitney Straight prototype loaned to Lindbergh was rather like a lower-powered Mohawk.
