Vought F6U Pirate
Незадолго до окончания Второй мировой войны компания «Vought» приступила к проектированию одноместного реактивного истребителя V-340 для ВВС США. Это был первый турбореактивный самолет фирмы, тем не менее, проект устроил ВМС, которые 29 декабря 1944 года заказали постройку трех прототипов XF6U-1.
Фюзеляж истребителя, получившего наименование Pirate, имел обшивку из материала Metalite, запатентованную «Vought». Обшивка Metalite представляла собой два листа прочного легкого сплава с прослойкой из бальсы. Горизонтальное оперение установили на киле немного выше фюзеляжа, на законцовках стабилизатора серийных самолетов имелись небольшие концевые шайбы. Шасси - убираемое с носовой опорой. На законцовках крыла предусмотрена подвеска сбрасываемых топливных баков.
Первый из трех прототипов выполнил первый полет с сухого озера Мюрок 2 октября 1946 года с ТРД Westinghouse J34-WE-22 тягой 13,34 кН, установленным в хвостовой части фюзеляжа.
Первый серийный F6U-1 полетел в июле 1949 года, а в августе того же года начались поставки истребителей в ВМС США. Всего заказали 65 самолетов, но поставили только 30, заказ остальных машин был аннулирован.
Обозначение F6U-1P получил один серийный F6U-1, на который установили фотокамеры.
