The concept of crew resource management was created by John K Lauber while he was working on the Lockheed P-3 Orion as a research psychologist at the Naval Training Devices Center, Orlando in 1969. He later studied pilot performance in a civil aviation setting at NASA's Ames Research Center.

The incident is regarded as a prime example of crew resource management as 184 of the 296 passengers and crew on board survived.
