A Sunderland III. The engines were the same as the Mk II but the dorsal turret had been introduced. Squadron code letters were not usually included on Mk IIIs. Perhaps the most important improvement on the Sunderland III was the faired main step which resulted in a saving of ten per cent of air drag without impairing the hydrodynamic performance of the hull.

The bomb carriages under the wings of a Sunderland, photographed at the RAF Museum. They could be moved to these outboard positions through doors in the hull either by an electrical mechanism or manually. These examples are anti-submarine bombs, which were replaced early in the war by 250lb depth-charges specially developed for aircraft use.
