Roy Chadwick's rough sketch, made at home circa 1946-47, of a delta-winged passenger aircraft. Chadwick was never to see the concept materialise into the Vulcan bomber, but he left behind an excellent team to carry on with its design.

Roy Chadwick (with scarf) in the cockpit of the Avro Nene Lancastrian VH742 on the occasion of its flight to the Paris air show on November 18, 1946. Flown by Capt R. T. Shepherd, VH742 made the 50min flight from Heathrow to Le Bourget at an average speed of 263 m.p.h. It was the first occasion that a jet airliner had flown from one country to another.

A. V. Roe, Roy Chadwick, the Russian pilot Gwaiter and Bert Hinkler (second from right) standing in front of Avro Baby G-EBDA. This aircraft was sold in Russia and in May 1922 made the first London-Moscow flight.

Following Chadwick’s crash in the Avro Baby, the wreckage was taken back to the Hamble works. The designer was lucky to escape with his life - the author recalls her father telling her that the Baby's control column went through the side of his neck.

Roy Chadwick in front of the Avro Aldershot at the Avro experimental works at Hamble in 1921. The wing span of the single-engined heavy bomber was 68ft.
