    Fleet Model 2 NC612M photographed at South Crenshaw Boulevard. Operated by the Aero Association of California, this 28ft-span Kinner K-5-powered biplane was used extensively throughout the USA as a primary trainer and was fully aerobatic - in 1930 the late Paul Mantz performed 46 consecutive outside loops in his Fleet 2.

  • A Ryan Standard photographed at Dycer Airport, south Los Angeles, circa 1930. The early activities of the Mahoney-Ryan company began with modifying World War One Standard biplanes into cabin transports, much as Avro did with the 504K and Bristol with the F.2B. Powered by the 150 h.p. Hispano-Suiza, nine Ryan-Standards had been built in 1922.

    NC4278 appears to be a Hispano-Suiza-powered Waco DSO. Offered with either 150 or 180 h.p. engines, the “Hisso” Waco three-seater was certificated in June 1928 and about 50 were built. This one, owned by the Richfield Oil Company, is seen at Crenshaw Boulevard.

  • This Cessna AW is seen at Clover Field, Santa Monica. It is probably powered by a 110 h.p. Warner Scarab. The 40ft-span cantilever wing was built in one piece and bolted directly to the top of the fuselage.

  • This “Hisso” Swallow was photographed at Crenshaw Boulevard in south-west Los Angeles. The site is now completely built over. The Swallow was built by the Swallow Airplane Company at Wichita and powered by various engines, in this case a 150 or 180 h.p. Hispano-Suiza. This version was certificated in July 1928 and only a few were built.

  • This Barling NB-3 trainer is seen at Crenshaw Boulevard. The three seat Nicholas-Beazley Barling NB-3 was available with a variety of engines including the Le Blond.
