Clive Du Cros' all-wooden full-size Supermarine Spitfire prototype replica airborne at last, at RAF Hullavington. The geared Jaguar V12-powered aircraft made its maiden flight at 1900hr on June 7, 1991 and its second on June 20, both in the hands of Pete Thorn, and without any significant problems. On the second flight the undercarriage was retracted and a climb to 2,000ft was made, reports Du Cros. A stall was made, clean, at 50kt, and a flapped approach coming in at 70kt over the hedge. A third flight was made on June 28, just before this issue went to press.

Whoops! Supermarine Spitfire IX MH434, operated by the Duxford-based Old Flying Machine Company and painted in Belgian markings for this year's Biggin Hill Air Fair, loses its propeller tips at Biggin on June 16, 1991 during engine-running. The good news is that MH434 was back in the air by the end of June; the better news is that the OFMC has just acquired Hawker Sea Fury VH-HFX from Australia - it should be at Duxford by July 31, says the company.

Nearing completion at Stoke-on-Trent is collector Ken Fern's Austin Whippet replica, inspired by Philip Jarrett's article on the aircraft in July 1989’s Aeroplane. Ken needs a suitable engine for it (the original had a six-cylinder Anzani).
