    The sole surviving airworthy Spitfire Mk I is AR213, owned by Victor Gauntlett and Peter Livanos and operated from Booker by Personal Plane Services. Although seen here in the markings of 609 Sqn, this aircraft served only with Nos 57 and 53 OTUs.

    Spitfire Mk I K9814, like the author’s first solo Spitfire, K9817, was part of the first production batch of 310 aircraft delivered to the RAF between July 1938 and April 1939. Assigned to 5 OTU, K9814 crashed at Aston Down on June 3, 1940. K9817 survived the war and was finally struck off RAF charge in June 1947.

    One of several photographs taken illegally by the author of Spitfire Mk II P8088 of 118 Sqn at RAF Ibsley. Bearing the name The Borough of Lambeth, whose people subscribed to its purchase, the Spitfire sports the Daily Mirror cartoon character Captain A.R.P. Reilly-Ffoull. P8088 was allocated to the author.

    Early Spitfire Is at Eastleigh in 1939, all but one with the big wooden fixed-pitch propeller. Note the original-type, flat-topped cockpit hood. In the background is K9791, the fifth production aircraft, then fitted with a de Havilland variable-pitch propeller. Jeffrey Quill, Vickers Supermarine chief test pilot, is on the right of the group in the foreground.
