Two 23 Sqn Venom NF.2s airborne from RAF Coltishall. This version had the best altitude performance of the RAF two-seat Venoms and, up to 48,000ft, stood some chance of intercepting Canberras and Valiants. However, with its older radar and poor safety features, it should not really have been accepted for squadron service.

Arthur Bowbeer’s cutaway drawing of the business end of the Vampire night fighter shows well the arrangement of the radar installation. The wing has been deleted in order to show the positioning of the Hispano 20mm guns.
