    Typical of many captured German aircraft tested in the UK during the war was Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 AE479, c/n 1304, which was landed by mistake in an orchard at Woerth in Bas-Rhin, France, on November 22, 1939, in fog.

    Another study of Bf 109E-3 AE479. This aircraft was flown to Boscombe Down on May 3, 1940, after first being flown at the French test centre at Bricy, near Orleans.

    The tyres of Me 262A-2a Air Min 51, VK893, flown by Sqn Ldr Martindale, smoke as they accelerate to take the high landing speed at the RAE on October 29, 1945. This aircraft was “Red X” of 2/KG51 before its capture at Achmer.
    Me 262A-2a WNr 112372 was captured at Achmer in 1945 and is seen here being flown by the RAE Aerodynamics Flight towards the end of 1945. It was given the serial number VK893 and is now preserved in the Aerospace Museum at Cosford.

    Me 163B-1a VF241, Werknr 191060, seen at the RAE in 1945, was flown over from Germany in an Arado 232B-0. It was test-flown as a glider in England, being towed aloft by Spitfire F.IXs from Wisley and Wittering, until it ended its life in a crash landing on November 15, 1947.

  • On September 6, 1945, Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 Drache V14, coded DM+SR, became the first helicopter to fly across the English Channel. Later serialled VM479, it was tested by the AFEE at Beaulieu.
