The Southampton formation, which made two display passes and a 360° turn above Hythe, broke the previous record of ten non-military-owned Spitfires, established during the filming of Battle of Britain in the 1960s. A more recent attempt, at a Middle Wallop show in 1986, managed only eight. Even national air forces equipped with the type have not bettered the total of 13, although Spitfire specialist Peter Arnold has records of 11- and 12-aircraft formations by the Burmese and the Israelis. Did the Southampton and Duxford shows in May provide us with the last chance to see Spitfires in such profusion? Unlikely. Duxford was where the Spitfire first entered RAF service, in August 1938. Which means, as the airfield's press officer Frank Crosby tells Vintage News with a gleam in his eye, "There's another anniversary coming up in two years' time..."

SAAF Museum Flight Spitfire IX TE213/5518 made its first air-to-air photographic sortie on April 20, 1996, flown by Atlas Aviation test pilot Rick Culpan. It was delivered to AFB Swartkop and made its public debut at the museum's flying day the same day.

Following several months of major servicing and a wing re-spar which is anticipated to see the aircraft well into its next 50 years of flying, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Avro Lancaster PA474 is returning to duty. Owing to shortage of space in Duxford’s Superhangar - and a paint-spraying job on the museum’s B-52 - the TWM’s static Avro Lancaster X KB889 was parked in the open for a week during April 1996. Acquired for restoration in 1986, it was rolled out in November 1994.
