The Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry’s Supermarine Spitfire IX, ML427, served with the Fighter Leaders School and became an instructional airframe (6457M) in 1947. It subsequently served as a gate guardian at Castle Bromwich from 1954 until it went to the museum in 1958.

The Aerospace Museum’s Hawker Hart IIA K4972 at Cosford in June 1969. Delivered to the RAF in 1935, this aircraft served with 2 FTS until relegated to an instructional airframe (1764M).

A special exhibition of Mike Beach’s glider collection (plus his Bleriot XI at top left) at the Brooklands Museum in 1993. From bottom of picture: Slingsby Falcon I replica, Slingsby Gull 3, Schleicher Rheinland, Manuel Willow Wren, Abbott-Baynes Scud II, Hols der Teufel replica. All but the Rheinland are still at Brooklands, although space limitations dictate that they spend much of their time stored in their trailers. The hangar in this view has since been demolished.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum’s Fairey Albacore, N4389, was rebuilt by Viv Bellamy and museum volunteers using components recovered from four Albacore crash sites. The identity comes from a tail unit incorporated in the rebuild which was recovered from Northern Norway - the original N4389 was shot down in the Kirkenes Raid of 1941.

The Shuttleworth Collection’s Hawker Sea Hurricane I Z7015 will be making display appearances at Duxford - where it was restored to airworthiness with the support of the Imperial War Museum - and at Shuttleworth’s Old Warden base, where it it seen here on May 5, 1996.

The Aerospace Museum’s Handley Page Hastings T.5, TG511. Originally delivered to 47 Sqn as a Mk 1, this Hastings ended its active Service life with No 230 OCU, becoming instructional airframe 8554M in August 1977.

The second prototype Fairey Ultralight helicopter, G-AOUJ, in Royal Navy markings, being demonstrated by Lt-Cdr J.G.P. Morton at the 1958 SBAC show at Farnborough. Today G-AOUJ may be seen at the International Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset.

The Cotswold Aircraft Restoration Group’s Edwards gyrocopter, built by N.A.F. Edwards in 1961-62. Powered by a 650 c.c. Triumph motorcycle engine, it is believed to have been damaged during trials. It was sold in September 1963.
