  • Fairchild C-119C Flying Boxcar 51-2634. This troop and supply transport, crewed by two pilots, a navigator and radio operator, first flew in November 1947. The C-119C was powered by two 3.500 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-4360-20WA radial engines. The last C-119s were withdrawn from United States Air Force service in 1975.

Spanning 38ft and armed with four forward-firing 20mm guns, it was powered by a 6,250lb s.t. Pratt & Whitney J48-P turbojet. This example, bearing the skull and crossbones insignia of VF-84, was flown by Lt (JG) R.F. McLaughlin.

  • The North American A3-1 Savage was a carrier-based nuclear strike aircraft powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-48 radial engines and a single Allison J33 turbojet in the tail. It was first flown in July 1948. Many were later modified as flight-refuelling tankers. The 75ft 2in-span aircraft had a maximum speed of 471 m.p.h. This aircraft bears the tail code of Navy Squadron VC-8.

  • United States Navy Lockheed P2V-5 Neptune (possibly BuNo 128345) of patrol squadron VP-26. Note the racks for 5in HVARs (high-velocity aircraft rockets) beneath the wings, the glazed nose, underbelly radome and the long stinger-like tail containing a magnetic anomaly detector. The P2V-5 spanned 104ft, was 81ft 7in long and carried a crew of nine on patrol and antisubmarine search.

  • USAF Douglas C-124C Globemaster troop carrier 51-7284. This heavy transport was first flown in November 1947. Powered by four 3,800 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-4360-63A radial engines, the C-124C could carry 68,500lb of cargo or 200 passengers and had a crew of eight. Its all-up weight was 194.500lb (about 87 tons).
