Flight magazine’s original caption for this eye-catcher was, “Target for a shoot-up. Flying Fortresses parked wingtip to wingtip at an American replacement depot near Munich. Probably these are now on their way to the Far East”. Taken in mid-1945, this aerial view shows around 175 B-17s awaiting disposal, probably at Erlangen. The aircraft were eventually flown home or destroyed on the spot.

Vought F4U Corsairs crammed on the foredeck of the Essex-class carrier USS Bunker Hill circa March 1945. The original wartime caption read, “Part of the great carrier force that went right into Tokyo’s front yard to strike at the heart of the Japanese Empire. With the task force standing some 300 miles offshore, the Navy planes shuttled back and forth between their carrier and their target to play havoc with Japan’s land installations and war industries”.Самолёты на фотографии: Vought F4U Corsair - США - 1940

Fresh horses. Newly-arrived high-backed P-51 Mustangs at an assembly plant in Britain in early summer 1944. The aircraft are still swathed in the grease and special wrappings which protected them while they crossed the Atlantic as deck cargo.

With the end of the war in Europe the flow of war materials from the USA to Britain reversed. These Lease-Lend P-51s are loaded on the spar deck of the grain carrier Empire Macrea at Liverpool docks for return to the USA. The RAF helped out the USAAF by preparing the aircraft for sea transit, conveying them by road to the docks and loading on to the ships. This particular cargo was photographed in August 1945.
