The extraordinary and sinister Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter revealed its capabilities during the Gulf War. This is a test aircraft serving with the 412th TW at Edwards.

The Northrop XB-35 during its maiden flight on June 25, 1948. This superb machine was the competitor of the Consolidated (later Convair) B-36. Unfortunately, the aircraft suffered from the malfunctioning of its contra-rotating propellers and gearboxes. Besides, it was unable to accommodate the 10,000lb Mk III atomic bomb in its bomb-bay.
Northrop XB-35 prototype 42-13603 displays its four contra-rotating propellers driven by two R-4360-17 and two R-4360-21 engines.

A unique gathering of experimental aircraft at Edwards, portraying the wide variety of configurations tested in the early jet era. In the centre is the twin-jet Douglas X-3 Stiletto, and around it, clockwise from bottom left, are the rocket-powered Bell X-1A, the Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak, the delta-winged Convair XF-92A, the variable-sweep Bell X-5, the swept-wing Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket and the stubby, tailless Northrop X-4 Bantam.

Record after record fell to the amazing rocket-powered North American X-15, which became the world’s fastest and highest-flying winged aircraft. A record speed of 4,520 m.p.h. was eventually attained.
