Когда подозрительный самолет пересекает воздушную границу США, DAICC немедленно поднимает перехватчик. DAICC обеспечивает разведку, связь и радиолокационное обеспечение для перехватчика и наземных групп, задействованных в операции. Кроме того, в случае необходимости для радиолокационного обеспечения могут привлекаться самолеты P-3 (на фото), значительно облегчающие слежение за нарушителем.

"Lockheed" разрабатывала P-3 в варианте ДРЛОиУ для поставок на экспорт. На P-3 была установлена РЛС APS-125 от самолета E-2 Hawkeye. Аэродинамический прототип с обтекателем антенны РЛС APA-171 выполнил первый полет 14 июня 1984 года, позже на него установили все штатное оборудование. Этот прототип стал первым P-3 ДРЛОиУ, переданным Таможенной службе США, позже таможня получила еще три машины. На снимке - N148CS.

Lockheed NP-3C BuNo 153442/'357' is the sole Orion flown by the US Navy equipped with a rotodome. It is assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 30 (VX-30) ‘Bloodhounds’, having replaced BuNo 153443, which was retired in October 2012. NP-3C ‘357’ was built as a P-3B in 1967, before being modified as an EP-3B for the Naval Research Laboratory and redesignated as an NP-3D in February 1995. The rotodome was added in 1999 as part of the Combat Information Centre programme for the E-2 Hawkeye, and the aircraft joined Scientific Development Squadron 1 (VXS-1) based at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in December 2004. It was transferred to VX-30 in October 2013 and is seen on approach to NAS Pont Mugu, California, on February 3, 2014.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Lockheed - P-3B AEW&C Orion N144CS (c/n 5242, ex BuNo 153446) was redelivered on September 23, 2014 after Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) work undertaken by Lockheed Martin. MLU adds new avionics and an update of the airborne early warning system's computers. The aircraft is the tenth of 14 CBP Orions to be modernised, including a mixture of AEW&C and 'slick' aircraft.

Sporting the US Customs Service's new overall tactical grey colour scheme, their third P-3 AEW&C aircraft was delivered from Burbank on June 26, 1992. Since delivery of the first aircraft three years ago the Orions have proved extremely successful in anti-drug smuggling operations, the AEW examples with their GE APS-138 target detection radar normally operating as hunter-killer pairs in conjunction with rhe USCS's four P-3 ’slicks’ fitted with specialised tracking and surveillance equipment. The fourth and final AEW conversion is scheduled for delivery next year.
