Lockheed L-188 Electra

Transporte Aereo Militar has recently reacquired this Lockheed Electra, which it took into service as TAM-69 in 1973. It was transferred to the Escuadrilla Ejecutiva as the Presidential transport in May 1975 as TAM-01 and retains this number since its return to TAM.
Little seen in UK skies for many years, the Lockheed Electra has seen something of a local resurgence in the last few years with both Hunting Cargo Airlines and Channel Express now operating the type in the all freight role, L-188CF G-CEXF from the latter operator depicted here emphasising its role by the complete lack of cabin windows.

First operated by the US Navy after being ordered by Capital Airlines as N181H, Lockheed Electra L188C (c/n 1130) later spent time with Pacific Southwest Airlines and the National Center for Atmospheric Research before starting its air tanker career. Now owned by Air Spray of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, C-FLXT Tanker 481 is one of nine in active service with Air Spray. It features a 3,000-gallon Retardant Aerial Delivery System tank that Air Spray owns the supplemental type certificate for.

First flown in December 1957, the Lockheed L.188 Electra was a rival to the Vanguard. It faced several technical problems early on and production amounted to 172. The L.188 was primarily tailored around the needs of American Airlines. N6101A ‘Flagship New York’ was delivered in November 1958 but became the first Electra to crash when it plunged into the East River on approach to New York’s La Guardia on February 3, 1959.

Qantas retained a pair of DC-4s for services to Norfolk Island but was in the process of becoming an “all-747” airline. Beyond the Qantas line is a pair of Ansett Lockheed Electras.

Daniel J. Haughton, Chairman of the Lockheed Board from May 1967, presents a model of the company’s L-1011 wide-body airliner, flanked by models of two of the manufacturer’s previous products - the Electra (left) and Constellation. The building of the airliner was to some extent dependent on the delivery of its Rolls-Royce engines - and vice versa.
LOCKHEED 188A ELECTRA. The Electra is a medium-range passenger transport which made its first flight on 6th December 1957. The decision to produce the Electra was made after the Lockheed Company had made an extensive survey in 1952-53 of future aircraft requirements of the American airlines, and in the autumn of 1954 preliminary design was started. The first airline to order Electras was American Airlines for thirty-five aircraft, followed by Eastern Air Lines with an order for forty. Total number now on order is 147, and the first to enter airline service will go to Eastern Air Lines, who plan to use it from November this year. The fuselage is of circular cross-section over most of its length, and large rectangular windows will give passengers an excellent view. The wing is built around a box beam and has Fowler-type flaps and mass-balanced ailerons, each with one trim tab. Powerplant consists of four Allison 501-D13 turboprop engines, each developing 3,750 e.s.h.p. at take-off. Later models will be able to take engines developing up to 5,500 e.s.h.p. each. Propellers are either Aeroproducts or Hamilton Standard four-blade reversible pitch of 13 ft. 6 in. diameter. The pressurised fuselage will accommodate five crew members and eighty-one passengers, but a high-density version will seat eighty-five. Integral passenger stairs fold into the fuselage wall when not in use. Several versions of the Electra are planned, but all will carry up to 4,000 lb. of air freight and mail, in addition to the normal amount of passengers' baggage.
