В китайском Шеньяне был создан свой собственный морской вариант Су-27, получивший обозначение J-15. Вероятно, он оснащен БРЭО китайского производства, отработанным на J-11B. Сообщается, что прототип J-15 совершил первый полет в 2009 году, а серийные машины будут служить на китайском авианосце "Ляонин" - бывшем советском "Варяге".

23 ноября 2012г. китайский палубный истребитель J-15 впервые совершил посадку на авианосец "Ляонин". Два самолета (бортовые №№ 552, 553) успешно выполнили не только посадку, но и взлет. По заявлению заместителя командующего ВМС НОАК вице-адмирала Чжан Юни, в ходе испытательных полетов были также отработаны навыки посадок в сложных погодных условиях.

A two-seat version of the Shenyang J-15 is believed to have made its maiden flight on November 3, 2012. Dubbed the J-15S, the aircraft is seen on the ground at Shenyang either just before or after the flight on the same day. The maiden sortie reportedly lasted 10 minutes, during which time the aircraft circled the airfield four times. The J-15S is a two-seat development of the J-15 that is expected to operate from the new Chinese aircraft carrier.
