The sequence of three photographs taken at Leipheim, show a triple tow take-off. In this photograph the Me 321A is airborne with rocket motors still operating (note the prototype Me 323C with four engines in the foreground).
An Me 321A is towed into the air at Leipheim. Seen in the foreground is the prototype Me 323C. The early powered versions were converted from gliders but the four engines gave insufficient take-off power at maximum weight. Hanna Reitsch carried out the fifth test flight of the prototype Gigant, a glider that was only slightly smaller than today's Boeing 747.
The beautiful Lippisch-designed Fafnir sailplane competing at the 1930 Wasserkuppe meeting held in the German Rhon hills. The Rhon was the hub of the German gliding movement during the Thirties.
Typical of the period is this Kassel 25, photographed on the Wasserkuppe in August 1931. The type was put into production shortly afterwards.
