The pugnacious-looking Firefly IV introduced a number of changes to the airframe, notably the relocation of the coolant and oil radiators from the nose to the leading edge centresection, a revised tail structure and clipped wings. The underwing pods contained radar in the starboard and fuel in the port. Note the unusual underwing roundels “wrapped around” each pod.

The Firefly was capable of carrying an impressive range of armament and equipment under the wings. For ground-attack, the aircraft could be fitted with various combinations of bombs and rocket projectiles (RPs), and mines or depth charges with AN/ARR-3 sonobuoys for the anti-submarine role.

A Firefly FR.4 suffers a broken port undercarriage leg during a deck landing on an unidentified Royal Navy carrier. Because the tailwheel was fully castoring, it was highly directionally unstable, making it easy to write off the undercarriage during the landing run.
