IN 1917 THE SMALL FIRM of Brazil Straker of Bristol had developed an excellent air-cooled 14-cylinder radial engine called the Mercury. Having a capacity of 20 litres, it produced a reliable 300 h.p. The following year saw a new engine, the Jupiter, a nine-cylinder radial, with a capacity of 28-7 lit, which produced 400 h.p. in prototype form, for a weight of 662lb. The key feature of this engine, produced by two highly talented engineers, Roy Fedden and L.F.G. Butler, was the use of four valves per cylinder for better “breathing", an innovation at the time.
