AIR ATLANTIQUE at Coventry has recently sold a couple of its large fleet of Douglas DC-3s fleet of Douglas DC-3s, and the first to find an overseas buyer is G-AMPZ, which is now with Air Service at Berlin's Tempelhof airport. The aeroplane, shown, which had been painted in a post-war RAF Transport Command scheme for the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift in 1998, was stripped down and put into an overall-silver scheme at Coventry before the ferry flight to Germany.

THE CONFEDERATE AIR Force, which tragically lost a Fairchild PT-19A in an accident in April 2001, followed by a BT-13 during May, has put a PT-19B Cornell back into the air.
The Fairchild, shown, assigned to the Heart of America Wing of the CAF at New Century Airport at Kansas, was being flown to the annual CAF gathering at Midland, Texas, in October 2000, when its Ranger engine failed, and the pilot forced-landed in a field. The trainer was taken back to New Century by road, and the offending engine was stripped down and rebuilt. The Cornell flew again in July. Another engine has been found and acquired in California, and will now act as a spare.

From the end of World War Two until the early 1970s, redundant aeroplanes were often to be found as part of the "street furniture" in America, employed to attract to attract customers to a wide variety of businesses - and especially finding favour with petrol - station owners.
Almost all those machines have now disappeared, but this Vultee BT-13 trainer was seen, still in situ at a gas station near Fresno, California, during the summer of 2001.

AT ORANGE COUNTY airport in New York State, USA, Mike Maniatis made several successful test flights in his replica of the 1927 D.H.71 Tiger Moth racer in mid-October. The accompanying photograph is the first air-to-air taken of the machine, which made a couple of hairy test flights in 1995 before being grounded for a major weight-reduction programme. This resulted in the shedding of 140lb from the airframe, and a much healthier c.g.

THE SHUTTLEWORTH Collection has acquired a Percival Provost T.1 to add to its collection of British trainers. The machine, G-KAPW/XF603, arrived at the collection's Old Warden Aerodrome with Aviation Trustee Tony Haig-Thomas at the controls on November 2, 2001, having been sold to the collection by Tim Manna, whose Kennet Aviation company at Cranfield specialises in historic jet fighters and trainers. The aeroplane is one of only two Provosts worldwide with a long fatigue life left on its airframe.
