News report of 23.9.54 showing the accident to Avro York XG898 (previously G-ANRC and MW327) at Stansted the day before. The accompanying article raised the issue of greater safety of rearward-facing seats in accidents while recognising the discipline of service passengers in this case.
22.9.54 Avro York G-ANRC of Scottish Aviation swung on take-off at Stansted on trooping flight and burned out. Capt A Brandt, five crew and 45 troops on board, en route to Egypt, were evacuated with only one injured but the York was dbf. Formerly RAF MW327 from 27.11.47 to 22.2.52, it was sold to Scottish Avn 28.4.54 and used trooping serial XG898 before being regd G-ANRC on 23.7.54. Was it using trooping serial on this flight?
22.9.54 On page 96/57 we posed the question of what marks the Scottish Aviation York G-ANRC was wearing when it crashed on a trooping flight at Stansted. The news cutting above clearly shows that trooping serial XG898 was being carried behind the roundel while part of the over-painted civil registration is visible forward of it. The Scottish Aviation lion is retained on the fin.
