Right engine failed after take-off and in attempting to return in poor visibility at 0757 hrs PST the left wing struck a power line and the aircraft hit two parked USAF C-54s and broke apart in front of Lockheed Service Hangar No.24. Captain Joseph A Bradsher, First Officer Keith C Dutson and one person on the ground were killed, stewardess Utta Jorgensen and 1 passenger seriously injured, others minor.

17.7.55 Braniff Airways Convair 340-32 N3422 c/n 71, Fleet No.422, on instrument approach to Midway Airport at 0622 hrs CST, struck an 18 ft high petrol station advertising sign at the intersection of 55th Street and Central Avenue, Chicago, continued through the boundary fence and overturned in flames. Captain Allen R Tobin, stewardess Mary E Teel and 20 passengers were killed; First Officer Orbin W Hanks and 11 passengers seriously injured; 9 passengers had minor or no injuries.
