  • Регистрационный номер: N1203V, KA997

Something for the record! Photographed this year at Miami, a highspeed photo-survey Mosquito recently acquired by the Flying Tiger line. Apart from a revised nose (extended to take vertical cameras) N1203V appears to be a standard ex-U.S.A.F. F-8. Forty were purchased from D.H. (Canada) in 1943 from the production line of B.Mk. XXs.
Dianna Bixby's Mosquito B.25 N1203V shown in final configuration in late 1955.
A 7.4.50 p.395 - The Mosquito B.25 N1203V was regd with c/n 59851A, the significance of which is not known. The accompanying photo, taken in late 1955, shows that the slipper tanks had been removed, as had the Aviation Export Co titles and shark's teeth (see p.96/53), while the new camera position under the nose is clearly visible.

  • Регистрационный номер: CF-BND

QCA Dragon Rapide CF-BND amongst the trees on Digby Island 29.7.49.
F 27.7.50 p.121 - Queen Charlotte Airlines acquired two Dragon Rapides from Central Northern Airways, CF-AYE c/n 6304 and CF-BND c/n 6375, to operate between Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands as the DoT did not allow single-engined types to operate across the Hecate Strait. CF-BND was lost 29.7.49 when its departure from Prince Rupert the previous day had been delayed due to bad weather. Overnight, local fishermen are believed to have siphoned off the fuel and shortly after take-off the engines stopped and pilot Roy Berryman crash-landed among trees on Digby Island without injury to himself or the three lady passengers. CF-BND was at the time regd to Central Northern Airways of Winnipeg - wef 2.6.47 and 97/21 leased to QCA. The Rapides were replaced by a Grumman Goose leased from the Powell River Co (? they had CF-BAE 5.52 to 5.55) and CF-AYE was transferred to Vancouver, where it was eventually donated to the Airport Fire Department.

THE RECORD HOLDERS, 1949. Point to Point [Pilot/crew]
    * New York-London - 9/10.5.37; Lockheed Electra NR16059 c/n 1065; 20hr 29min [272.345km/hr] HT Merill/JS Lambie. H.T.(Dick) Merrill and J.S.(Jack) Lambie flew Lockheed 10E Electra c/n 1065 NC16059 'Daily Express' to bring London within 20 hr 29 min of New York. The return flight of 24 hr 22 min was made carrying newsreels of the coronation of King George VI. The engines of the 10E were two 450 hp Pratt & Whitney S3H1 9-cyl radials instead of the 400 hp P & W SB 9-cyl radials fitted to the 10A. NC16059 was afterwards used in the unsuccessful search for the missing Russian polar flyers Levanevsky and Levchenko and ended its career in Russia. Wing span 16.76 m (55 ft), Loaded weight 4673 kg (10,500 lb).
Merrill Lambie's record-breaking Lockheed 10E NR16059 was afterwards sold to Russia and is seen before departure with registration N-214 on the rudder and USSR on the wing and fuselage.

  • Регистрационный номер: G-AJCK

Heath Parasol G-AJCK undergoing its first engine runs after construction in 1948 with 30 hp ABC Scorpion.
Aeroplane 25.8.50 * p.229 - A photo/article about Heath Parasol G-AJCK - the first to be reconstructed post-war (does this imply it was originally built pre-war?) and demonstrated at the RAeS Garden Party at White Waltham, powered by a 36 hp JAP and now with Airways Flying Club at Hurn. [It was soon to be cancelled - does anyone know why?]
A 25.8.50 p.229 - Heath Parasol G-AJCK was probably roaded to the RAeS Garden Party at White Waltham, but does 'demonstrated' imply that it flew while there - our correspondent who was there does not recall seeing it airborne but it would appear to have been airworthy at the time. Originally built in 1948 by the South Hants Ultra Light Aircraft Club at Christchurch, it was fitted with a 30hp ABC Scorpion flat twin. An Authorisation to Fly for test flights only was issued 24.12.48 until 13.1.49 but the in this form it was underpowered. Purchased by the Airways Aero Association, it was fitted with a 36hp JAP J-99 flat twin and AtoF issued for test flights between 25.5.50 and 31.5.50. It was sold to R A Mann in 5.51 and later moved to Scampton. Photos in both forms, and other details, appeared on p.95/54. Oddly, Ken Ellis' British Homebuilt Aircraft since 1920 (2nd edition) says that it first flew in 1951 powered by the JAP but a photo on another page is captioned "flying at Detling in June 1950" and is clearly of the JAP-engined version. After a forced landing (at Scampton?) in 1954 it became a Guy Fawkes burnt offering on 5.11.54.
