Twin Pioneer G-AOEO c/n 503 seen in Swissair markings on the occasion of its high altitude trials in Switzerland in early 1957. Mountain flying in gusty conditions put greater loads on the wings than route flying but it departed on its North Africa/Middle East tour without the wing attachment modification incorporated in all the other aircraft and the port wing failed in flight on 18.12.57. The modification would have taken only two days to fit, the decision not to do so proved fatal for all those on board.
8.12.57 Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer G-AOEO c/n 503 on demonstration tour crashed near Mizda in Libyan desert 660 mis SW of Tripoli due to fatigue failure of the main strut to the port wing and collapse of the from V-brace tube. Capt Roy Smith, the flight engineer, Scottish Avn's Managing Director Gp Capt David F McIntyre and three oil company passengers were killed. Following the loss of JZ-PPX on 30.8.57 when both wings broke off, a modification had been available in upgraded strength but this had not been fitted to G-AOEO.

G-AOYF c/n 255 was the prototype V.806A "Michael Faraday" which crashed on 20.10.57 during a simulated emergency landing when on tropical trials. It is seen here bearing the title ' Vickers Viscount 806-810'.
20.10.57 The Viscount which crashed at Johannesburg Airport was G-AOYF c/n 255 allocated BEA's "Michael Faraday" but retained by Vickers for tropical trials. It sustained serious damage to stbd wing, u/c and engines in making a minimum landing distance test (some versions say simulated emergency landing) at 1117 hrs local but was shipped back to the UK and rebuilt as c/n 418 G-APOX. Capt T S Harris and 8 or 10 crew (or 14 on board?) were unhurt.

It was positioning to Belfast to take the Minister of Supply and party back to London following an official visit to the new Short Bros research facility. The were no survivors of the seven on board, Capt Robert M Stewart, F/O William G Tomkins, three crew, a BEA employee and his wife. No cause determined.
