KLM Douglas DC-7C "Noordzee" PH-DSN c/n 45546 is the centre of attention at Prestwick 11.6.61 where it landed safely after the port outer (No.1) Wright R3350 engine detached itself over the Atlantic.
11.6.61 Douglas DC-7C PH-DSN "Noordzee" c/n 45546 of KLM on charter flight for the Electric Boat Co Athletic Club from New York to Amsterdam, suffered severe vibration in port outer propeller and engine off Northern Ireland. Propeller would not feather and a fire started in the engine which, after about 15 minutes, fell off into the sea. Capt Wilhelm Bellink landed safely at Prestwick with the 8 crew and 73 passengers unhurt.

The burnt-out remains of Electra PH-LLM in the desert outside Cairo, 12.6.61.
12.6.61 Lockheed L-188C Electra PH-LLM "Sirius" c/n 2019 of KLM, operating the Amsterdam - Bangkok service crashed and burnt out at 0420 local time 4km SE of the threshold of runway 34 at Cairo Airport. Capt Kenneth Reynolds, in command for the first time on the type, flew the approach manually but was judged to have underestimated the rate of descent and paid insufficient attention to instruments. The Captain, three crew and 13 passengers initially survived but three crew and 16 passengers died and one survivor died later. The Electra was reported to have hit power lines although this may not have been the cause of the accident. It carried a cargo of gold bars, less than half of which were ever recovered from the desert, officially.
