Регистрационный номер: CH-8 The Dornier Gs 1 prototype had the basic features of the Wal which it fathered, but differed mainly in having a high tailplane twin-fin tail unit and a raised open pilot cockpit and cabin enclosure. Here it carries the Swiss registration CH-8 but it still had to be destroyed due to the postwar restrictions on German aircraft manufacture.

Wal engine installations were arranged as tractor-pusher pairs in a single central nacelle above the wing, here two 360 hp Rolls-Royce Eagle IX V-12 water-cooled units. The crocodile top cowlings are open to form an inverted vee over the wide central radiators. Note the engine access walkways.

This Dutch Aviolanda-built Wal of the RNNAS was typical of military Wals with open cockpits for machine gunners in the nose and behind the wing. Two 500 hp Lorraine 12Ed 12-cyl W (3-row) water-cooled engines were fitted, the front engine with a nose radiator and the rear engine with a radiator underneath.

The sponsons on the Wal and Superwal made convenient boarding platforms for passengers, who then had to step up onto the hull to enter the cabin by way of a roof hatch under the wing. A calm water state would clearly be preferable!

A view inside the Wal cabin looking aft shows that entry and exit for the passengers was by way of a roof hatch and a step ladder, not a method best suited to invalids, or indeed to ladies. Pilots still preferred open cockpits.
