    View of D.H.9 ambulance D3117 at Eil Dur Elan, Somaliland, in 1920. With suitably modified rear fuselage it could accommodate a stretcher case - apparently complete with sola topi. Eil Dur Elan was the main advanced base for operations against the Mad Mullah.

    Large Handley Page bombers rarely failed to impress during their Empire visits. This O/400, C9700, pioneered the air route from England to Delhi, arriving on December 12, 1918. On May 24 the following year another Handley Page, V/1500 J1936, ended an Afghan revolt led by Amir Amanullah by bombing his fortress at Kabul

    The Vickers Vernon troop carrier played an important supporting role in the policing of the Empire. This example, J7541, was the last one used by 70 Sqn, which relinquished the type in December 1926 in favour of Victorias. It is seen over the Tigris at Baghdad early in 1927.
    The Vernon was a troop carrier powered by two 450 h.p. Napier Lion engines. J7541 flew with No 70 Sqn and Plt Off Spaight and Mr Steer are just visible in the cockpit. Note the inspection panels on the top wing.
