Регистрационный номер: VP-FAC [5] Auster V VP-FAC being offloaded into the harbour, minus wings and tail surfaces. The handling line fixed to the propeller bolts is not a good idea. The lifting sling is an improvisation - the original intention was to use the special lifting eyes built into the wing attachment fittings.

Регистрационный номер: VP-FAC [5] Auster V VP-FAC landing with full flap and under full power. When arriving this way it was possible to ease the stick forward when contact was felt, and then adjust the power to keep the aircraft under way until slowed right down. A power-off landing resulted in a mass of spray and a complete and rapid stop.

Регистрационный номер: VP-FAC [5] Auster V VP-FAC with the beaching trollies removed. The heels of the floats had to be kept clear of the slipway until the launch was organised, whereupon the author could be “piggy-backed" on to the port float. The rope to the lifting handle was needed to prevent the Auster from swinging into wind.

Регистрационный номер: VF517 This photograph of Auster VI VF517 clearly shows the built-in water rudders and the rather shorter auxiliary or ventral fin, finishing in line with the sternpost. Civil versions built later had this fin extended well past the rudder hinges. The Gipsy III-powered prototype is seen on its beaching gear.

The author's first brush with the nautical. He fitted the float modification at the Saunders-Roe works at Cowes.
