    20 Sqn Hunter FGA.9 XJ686 at Kuching, Sarawak on January 2, 1965. Stationed at RAF Tengah, the Hunters entered service with the FEAF in September 1961. Designed for tropical work and to replace the ageing Venoms serving with the RAF in the Middle East, the Hunter FGA.9 carried two 230gal drop tanks, was fitted with additional underwing hardpoints for ground attack weapons and carried a tail parachute. The variant entered RAF service in October 1959 and was finally retired when No 8 Sqn’s FGA.9s went out of service in 1971.

    66 Sqn Westland Belvedere HC.1 XG451 flying at Lundu, Sarawak on December 1, 1966. The Belvedere first entered RAF service in September 1961. Powered by two 1,300 8.h.p. Napier Gazelles, the Belvedere short-range tactical transport could carry 18 fully-armed troops and a crew of two.

    Westland Belvedere HC.1 XG474 leaving Bau, Sarawak on October 25, 1963. Belvederes of 66 Squadron saw service right through the Brunei campaign of 1962-66, operating from Labuan in Borneo, providing transport support for the security forces until disbanded in March 1969. XG474 is now on display at the RAF Museum at Hendon.

    Gloster Javelin F(AW) Mk 7 XH908 pictured at Kuching on April 5, 1964. No 60 Squadron, based at RAF Tengah, flew 'Confrontation’ patrols into Eastern Malaysia with guns loaded and armed with live Firestreak missiles.

  • Scottish Aviation Pioneer XL704 at Kuching, Sarawak on April 24, 1965 - a Gloster Javelin of 60 Sqn can be seen in the background. The aircraft is probably one of three 20 Sqn Pioneers used for Forward Air Control at RAF Tengah during this period. Powered by a single 520 h.p. Alvis Leonides, the five-seat all-metal Pioneer entered RAF service as the CC.1 in August 1953, the first unit to receive the type being 267 Sqn at Kuala Lumpur.

    Auster AOP.9 WZ730 of 652 Sqn RAF (later Army Air Corps) flying at Kuching on June 3, 1964. Powered by the 180 h.p. Blackburn Cirrus Bombardier 203 engine, the A0P.9 - unlike previous RAF Austers - was designed from the outset as a military type. The two/three-seat aircraft commenced operations in Malaya with 652 Sqn in 1955.
