    Chilton D.W.1 G-AFGI running up its Lycoming O-145-A2 engine without its pilot at the Thruxton Open Handicap Race on September 16, 1962. It came last. This Chilton is now owned by J.E. McDonald, and is currently airworthy.

    Pre-war Squires Luton L.A.4 Minor G-AFIR at Lasham on May 25, 1963, during the National Gliding Championships. On March 14, 1971, 'FIR crashed at Fairoaks, but it has recently been restored to the register.

    Percival Proctor IV G-ANYP, formerly RAF aircraft NP184, started fourth in the Open Handicap Races, part of the Thruxton Air Races, held on September 16, 1962. It finished 17th in a field of 19. This Proctor was reported to be under rebuild

    Slingsby Type 29B G-AKJD first appeared in 1950. A standard Slingsby Tutor glider airframe fitted with a 40 h.p. Aeronca JAP J-99 engine, ’JD survived until it crashed at Dunstable Downs on June 21, 1964. It is seen here at the Blackbushe Spring Rally on April 7, 1963.

    Seen at Shoreham in 1954, Miles M.5 Sparrowhawk G-ADNL first emerged in 1935, powered by a Gipsy Major. In 1953 it appeared as the Miles M.77 Sparrowjet, re-engined with a pair of 330lb-thrust Turbomeca Palasjets. In 1957 it became the first jet aircraft to win the King's Cup Air Race, recording an average speed of 228 m.p.h. Paradoxically, in the 1938 event Alex Henshaw’s winning speed in the Gipsy Six R-powered Mew Gull G-AEXP has been 236 m.p.h! G-ADNL was destroyed by fire at Upavon in July 1964, but has recently been restored Io the register. It will he interesting to see in which form it will reappear.
