  • This Bf 109G-12 tandem two-seat trainer was one of many converted from G-1, G-5 and G-6 airframes for use by Luftwaffe flying schools. Notice how the canopy over the instructor's position at the rear was extended out sideways to allow the occupant some view forwards. The Bf109’s full armament was usually retained, and many G-12s saw operational service over Germany during the war's final stages. This machine also carries a 300lit underfuselage drop tank.

  • In this aerial view, Arado Ar 96 trainers, Dorniers, Junkers and Messerschmitt Bf 109s gradually succumb to the scrapman's torch. What wouldn’t a latter-day preservationist give for such “junk”? The identity of the long circular-section “fuselage" in the centre of the picture remains unknown, and there appears to be a flyingboat hull below it.

  • Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse F6+AN displays one of the twin remote-controlled barbettes installed just aft of the wing trailing edge, each of which housed a 13mm MG 131 gun.

  • Another view of Messerschmitt Me 410 F6+AN, showing the large nacelles housing its Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines. Evolved from the unsuccessful Me 210 heavy fighter, the Me 410 was much more successful, and over 1,160 were built, the type serving in the heavy fighter, reconnaissance and light bomber roles.

  • Local civilians lend scale to a characteristically bulbous-nosed Dornier Do 217M bomber. This variant had DB 603 inline engines instead oft he BMW 801s of earlier variants, as the latter engines were urgently required for Focke-Wulf Fw 190 production.

  • An imposing nose view of a Junkers Ju 188. The panel hanging down beneath the forward fuselage is the entrance hatch door. This machine is relatively intact, with complete glazing, although in common with all the other aircraft its propellers have been removed. First flown in late 1942, the Ju 188 was a private-venture development of the ubiquitous Ju 88. It was designed to accept either the Jumo 213 inline or the BMW 801 radial without alteration of the engine housing. Although the type was originally intended for dive-bombing, it was soon dedicated to level bombing, carrying its lethal charges in a fuselage bomb bay and on underwing racks.

  • This Junkers Ju 188 bomber is well past airworthiness. Although the extensive cockpit glazing is gone, the engines are still in situ. At least one Ju 188A-2 is known to have been used by the RAF for flights between Denmark and England in the summer of 1945.
