James Black has ferried a second Antonov An-2 into White Waltham, arriving there on August 8, 1996. Joining HA-MKF, the resident An-2, 22-seat HA-MKE has been bought by Luton airline chief Christopher Foyle, who plans to make it available for parachuting and air displays when he is not making use of it himself.

Duxford-based Catalina VR-BPS (ex G-BLSC), seen at Pisa on its way back from its second year of touring Italian beaches to promote Nastro Azzurro beer, arrived home on August 30, 1996. Operator Paul Warren-Wilson found the trip “hard work but absolutely fantastic”, taking in visits to 50 beaches - including no fewer than 33 water landings. In case you were wondering, the change to Bermudan registration was made to permit operation with American-approved passenger seating.

D.H. Rapide G-AGTM, remembered by many enthusiasts as Russavia’s all-silver Royal Navy-marked pleasure-flying NF875 at Duxford in the Eighties, is nearing completion of a long rebuild by Steve Evans at Farnborough for current owner Dave Geddes. Its new blue civilian paint scheme, gleaming from the shadows in a hangar at the back of the vintage static park at the Farnborough SBAC show in September 1996, attracted much interest.

Week before the Yorkshire Air Museum rolled-out its Halifax, another of its star exhibits was unveiled at Elvington: statically-restored de Havilland Mosquito NF.II HJ711 Spirit of Vai, a 27-year labour of love by Tony Agar and his team. Draped in an RAF Ensign and towed out from the museum’s T2 hangar on September 6, 1996, HJ711 was officially unveiled by renowned Mosquito exponent Air Marshal Sir Ivor Broom in the presence of former Mossie crews including Sqn Ldr Cooper, who shot down a Bf 110 in it.
