    Another visitor to Whenuapai from HMS Theseus was Royal Navy Seafire Mk XV SW805, built by Westland Aircraft Ltd. Note how the bottom of the rudder has been cut away to accommodate the sting-type arrester-hook. The Seafire XV first entered service, with 802 Sqn, in May 1945.

    Seen here in 1959, RNZAE Sunderland NZ4108 (ex RAE ML814) was one of a batch of Id reconditioned for the RNZAE at Belfast in 1958 and subsequently flown by 5 MR Sqn at Hobsonville, Auckland Bay, Eiji. NZ4108 later became VH-BRE Islander with Ansett, then Excalibur VIII with Antilles Air Boats, and then G-BJHS Sir Arthur Gouge under the ownership of Edward Hulton. Today the 'boat is registered N814ML to Kermit Weeks in the USA.

  • This anonymous Supermarine Sea Otter was photographed at RNZAE Station Whenuapai, Auckland, during the visit of the aircraft carrier UMS Theseus in 1947. Powered by the 855 h.p. Bristol Mercury XXX radial engine, the Sea Otter first flew in 1988; in total, 290 were built by Saunders-Roe Ltd of East Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
