An Armstrong Whitworth Whitley tows off a Hotspur glider at General Aircraft’s Hanworth Aerodrome. This was the combination which caused Davie problems when the glider overtook the tug in cloud and a large loop developed in the cable.

The third prototype Gloster F.9/40, DG204/G, was powered by a pair of Metrovick F.2 axial-flow turbojets in distinctively underslung cowlings. When one of these burst its compressor drum over the RAE on January 4, 1944, “Dougal” Davie was killed while attempting to bale out.

It was in a disabled Avro Lancaster Mk VI similar to JB675, seen here at the A&AEE in January 1944, that Purvis had a close shave on April 26 the same year, managing to steer it clear of Amesbury town and bring off a belly landing from which all of the crew escaped unharmed.

One of the more curious types flown by Sqn Ldr A.D. Miller was the unique slip-wing Hurricane, which was flown only in its biplane form.
Hurricane 321's slip wing was an all-wooden, expendable structure built around two box spars and skinned with ply. It more than doubled the aircraft’s wing area, and was intended to enable the fighter to take off with a vastly increased fuel load, thereby increasing its range for long-distance ferry flights. Had the slip-wing concept been a success, sights like this would have been common and discarded wings would have been fluttering down all over the place. As it was, the external fuel tank proved a much more sensible proposition, both practically and economically.

K8309 When fire broke out in the carburettor of Hawker F.9/35 Hotspur K8309 on February 12, 1942, Davie made a successful forced-landing at Hartford Bridge Flats from which he and his observer escaped. Unfortunately it was the end of the line for the Hotspur, which had originally had a four-gun turret in the rear cockpit position.
