On November 14, 1943, four Beaufighters of 46 Sqn and four more of 227 Sqn took off from Cyprus to support the British defenders on the island of Leros. Two Beaufighters of 46 Sqn shot a Heinkel He 111 down into the sea, as shown in this photograph. Meanwhile two Messerschmitt Bf 109s appeared and shot down the other two Beaufighters of 46 Sqn, killing the crews. The remainder of the RAF formation escaped the German fighters by flying over the Turkish coast.
