Fairford came in for a fair amount of criticism this year for being just too big, and for having too many gaps in its flying programme. Concorde bussed in spectators, but to the disappointment of many it has rarely appeared at shows in recent years.

For many enthusiasts the quintessential English airshow: the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden. Its shows have a distinctive, timeless character reinforced by its setting on an intimate grass aerodrome. Heading off into the sunset. Show organisers consistently failed to book the Fairey Flycatcher replica despite its unique portrayal of 1920s fighter technology, and it is now retired from the scene forever.
