The Snecma M53 for the Mirage 2000 is unusual in that it is a single spool engine having a single two-stage turbine driving both fan and HP compressor. It is usually poor practise to make the fan and HP compressor run at the same speed but the M53 offered carefree handling throughout the flight envelope, though it only achieves a pressure ratio of 9.8.
