These illustrations depict a MiG-27 Flogger-D of the V-VS Frontovaya Aviatsiya based in the DDR (Group of Soviet Forces in Germany). This displays the standard three-colour upper surface camouflage scheme employed by FA tactical fighters, but the exact pattern varies marginally from aircraft to aircraft.
The side profile shows clearly the sharply downward inclined nose contour of the MiG-27 (shared with the MiG-23BM) with laser range-finder in the extreme tip, ILS antenna (Swift Rod) below and pitot head (offset to starboard) projecting above. The fairing below and immediately ahead of the aircraft number houses the Continuous-Wave target illumination radar. Note the tandem racks on the wing glove pylon.Самолёты на фотографии: МиГ МиГ-27 - Россия - 1972

Two of the most important members of the Flogger family currently in V-VS service are the MiG-23MF Flogger-B (shown) and the MiG-27 Flogger-D, the former optimised for the air-air mission and the latter a dedicated air-ground aircraft. The photograph, taken during Exercise “Sever" last year, depicts MiG-27 Flogger-Ds of a squadron of the FA commanded by a Maj I Ivanov.

For comparison purposes, these drawings illustrate (left) the MiG-23MF Flogger-B and (right) the MiG-27 Flogger-D. Noteworthy differences between these variants include the latter’s larger intakes with belled outboard lips, deeper windscreen with sloping quarterlights, larger nosewheels and broader-tyre mainwheels, bulged centre fuselage, repositioned pylons, shorter tailpipe and ventral Gatling-type cannon.

The head-on view shows the repositioned outboard stores stations under the air intake trunks, the active ECM antenna (starboard) and missile guidance antenna (port) above the wing glove pylons, the deepened windscreen with downward sloping sills, the centreline Gatling-type cannon and the fixed inlets with belled outer lips and small fixed splitter plates. The bulges on the vertical tail surface house (lower) the braking parachute and (upper) the Sirena 3 radar warning receiver, below which is the ATC transponder. The other aerials for the Sirena warning radar are mounted in the wing glove.

The planview illustrates the wings at minimum (17 deg) and (ghosted) maximum (72 deg) sweep angles. It should be noted that in this half-and-half drawing, both top surfaces and under surfaces of the portside are illustrated, but the pitot projecting from the nose is shown to starboard. The bulge in the rear nosewheel door necessitated by the larger wheels employed by this (and MiG-23BM) version of Flogger may be clearly seen as may also the marked bulging of the fuselage (under the rear portion of the wing glove) necessitated by the enlarged tyres for improved grassfield operations capability. By comparison with other members of the Flogger family, the MiG-27 has an appreciably shorter tailpipe.

Two of the most important members of the Flogger family currently in V-VS service are the MiG-23MF Flogger-B (shown) and the MiG-27 Flogger-D, the former optimised for the air-air mission and the latter a dedicated air-ground aircraft. While the majority of Flogger-B fighters retain the light grey air superiority finish, an increasing number are now being camouflaged in a similar fashion to variants with a primary air-ground function, as is seen by this photograph taken at a VVS base in the Trans-Baikal Military District.

A MiG-23MF Flogger-B photographed in the landing circuit at a V-VS airfield in the DDR. It will be noted that, although sporting air superiority finish, this aircraft carries rocket pods - primarily air-ground ordnance - on the fuselage pylons. The emblem that may just be discerned on the nose denotes a measure of excellence attained by the unit.

Flogger-G differs in only minor respects from Flogger-B, the changes most obvious in this photograph being the shorter dorsal fin and the notched trailing edges of the horizontal tail surfaces.
