  • The other photograph is of one of 73 OTU's Mohawks after an undercarriage leg collapsed. Bob recorded flights in 2519, 2557 and 2549 in January and February 1942. Presumably these had migrated to Sheikh Othman from the South African Air Force in East Africa. We have a note that Mohawks, in small numbers, were with this OTU from January to November 1942, when the unit was reduced to a cadre prior to re-opening at Abu Sueir on 17 February 1943. Presumably the remaining Mohawks were left in Aden.

  • Ian Walkington has asked for identification of the aircraft shown here.
    It is obviously a Sopwith Pup and the tail of the Avro 504K in the background suggests that it was taken at a flying training school in 1917/18.
    Although no serial is visible, the personal identification of "Otazl" (in a hinomaru?) suggest that it was an instructor's personal aircraft. Is Otazl a Zulu name, we wonder?
    The hangar doors may give a clue as to where this photograph was taken as they do not seem to be standard TDS hangar doors.

    Dave Vincent has kindly sent us the photograph of Vengeance A27-560 at Carrum, Victoria, on 2 May 1945 which enlarges on the rather bald statement "Crashed at Carrum".
    The aircraft appears to have belly-landed with unfortunate effects on the local livestock population, probably after engine failure. The flaps are down but from the state of the propeller blades, they were still turning when the aircraft arrived at ground level. As the aircraft had not been issued, there are no unit markings on it.

  • Dave has also dug up a copy photo of three of the CW-22 Falcons mentioned in AM.4/91 page 101. Although not of top quality, it may be the only one of this migration that we are likely to see. He believes it may have been taken by Bob Whittle, an instructor at No.73 OTU. He delivered one of the Falcons to Aqir and flew N11, N13, N20, N34 and N35. Unfortunately, no serials are visible in the photograph to show if the Falcons had a N-prefix painted on them.
