ZK-GBD was a Slingsby T.42 Eagle, one of the company's lesser known products of which only sixteen were built. It was intended as a high-performance two-seat replacement for the successful T.21B trainer and was itself superseded by the T.49B Capstan.

Following New Zealand convention by wearing only 'BI' on the fin and rudder, ZK-GBI was a 1947 vintage ex British EoN Olympia 1. The type was based on the DFS Meise, designed in 1938 as a single seat sailplane for Olympic competition, hence the choice of name.
