Регистрационный номер: NX258Y, NR258Y, R258Y In 1940 Hughes had the Experimental 'X' replaced in the registration of the 1B, knowing that in the event of war experimental aircraft would not be impressed. After a period with Otto Timm, Hughes had it back and put it in storage until he had it restored for presentation to the Smithsonian/NASM in 1975.

The panel of the Hughes 1B in the Museum. Central is the Sperry Autopilot with 'follow-up' and directional gyro dials on the left and artificial horizon on the right. Extreme left under the wide open throttle and mixture control is the climb and descent indicator, and next to this two airspeed indicators for high speeds and low speeds respectively, the latter from 40 mph to 120 mph for landing. The sensitive altimeter is above the high-speed ASI, and the turn and slip is top right.

Howard Hughes at the controls of a Constellation. His youthful good looks were greatly changed by the XF-11 accident and he wears a moustache to hide scars.

The Consolidated Vultee PB2Y-3R Naval Transport (four Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 engines).
Illustrative of the type, a Coronado PB2Y-3R transport is seen on the step during take-off. Hughes' PB2Y-5Z N69003 had 3-blade Hamilton props on the outers and 4-blade hollow steel reversible props (presumably Curtiss) on the inners of the four 1200 hp P&W Twin Wasp R-1830-92 18-cyl air cooled radials.Самолёты на фотографии: Consolidated PB2Y Coronado - США - 1937

Регистрационный номер: NR440 [2], N440 [2] Hughes (standing on the cabin roof) examines Sikorsky S-43H NR440 at the factory before delivery. It has the central windows covered over where the extra fuel tanks were fitted in the cabin for the proposed round-the-world flight.

Регистрационный номер: NR440 [2], N440 [2] The S-43H at a later date showing the windows deleted on the right side also. The registration is still written with a hyphen but the N is in a lighter colour, possibly having been deleted at some time (the aircraft could fly without it in the Restricted category), or was this Hughes' way of making some kind of statement?

Регистрационный номер: NC19131 [2], N19131 [2] The Duromold moulded-wood process used on Hughes' D-2 was first tried by Fairchild on the fuselage of the one-off Clark F-46 five-seat cabin monoplane NC19131 c/n 5000 with 420 hp Ranger SGV77-B5 12-cyl inverted vee air-cooled engine.

Регистрационный номер: N19131 [2], NC19131 [2] With the engine changed to a 420 hp P&W R-985 Wasp Junior 9-cyl radial, Fairchild N19131 was still flying in 1974, proof enough of the durability of the Duromold process.
