Hawker Siddeley Harrier XV136 with "ROYAL NAVY" titles for the occasion, during trials with H.M.S. "Hermes" in the English Channel in February. Four aircraft took part in the tests: single-seat XV136 and XV281 from A.& A.E.E. Boscombe Down; and two-seat XW175 from R.A.E, Bedford and Hawker's G-VTOL

First deck landings on a ship at sea by a production Westland Lynx HAS.2 were made in February 1977 by XZ231 of No. 700L Squadron, the joint Anglo-Dutch I.F.T.U. based at R.N.A.S. Yeovilton. Piloted by No. 700L's C.O., Lt.-Cmdr. Geoff Cavalier, the Lynx is seen alongside the guided missile destroyer H.M.S. "Birmingham".
