  • The whole of R.A.F. Germany was committed to the exercise, including all five Jaguar squadrons which, it must be admitted, were not to be seen in pretty formations. This shot, staged earlier, does however illustrate a Jaguar from each unit (from the left): No.2 Squadron, which is based at Laarbruch and specialises in reconnaissance; Nos.14, 17, 20 and 31 Squadrons, which are all based at Bruggen and whose role is close support. Also taking part in "Crusader" were the Jaguars of No.54 Squadron, over from Coltishall

  • Main task of the R.A.F.'s Westland Wessex HC.2s was to move troops and supplies around the battlefield. Shown during a heliborne assault is one of the ten Wessex which No.72 Squadron brought over from Odiham and operated in a wood near Steinheim. "Crusader" was the last major exercise for R.A.F. Germany's own Wessex squadron, No.18, which has since returned to the U.K. and been replaced at Gutersloh by the Pumas of No. 230 Squadron
