Factory fresh He 111P-2s await delivery to the Luftwaffe at the Heinkel plant at Marienehe in the summer of 1940. NO+GO (WNr 3106), was later rebuilt to Р-4 standard.

During 1942 two Gruppen of He 111H-5s were tasked with torpedo-bombing operations in the Arctic circle. Here an He 111 prepares for a sortie with a pair of black-and-white-painted practice torpedoes used for training missions.

Because of delays in bringing the He 111’s replacement, the He 177 Greif, into service, the type had to continue in action despite becoming increasingly obsolete. These KG100 aircraft were photographed at a forward airfield in Russia in 1943.

The glazed cockpit of the He 111 made navigating much easier, despite the crew’s greater vulnerability to fire. The “Ikaria” gun position in the nose offered a 120° field of fire.
