PHIL MAKANNA photographed the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Arizona Wing’s Heinkel He 111 (actually Spanish-built CASA 2.111) N72615 in formation with the CAF Junkers Ju 52 (actually CASA 352L) N352JU near Midland, Texas, in October 2001. The Heinkel was repainted in desert colours in January 2001.

The Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is the only operator that can currently boast an airworthy representative of the Heinkel breed, in the shape of Spanish-built CASA 2.111, N72615, captured here by photographer PHILIP MAKANNA keeping close company with the another CAF machine, CASA 352L N352JU near Midland, Texas, in October 2001. The CASA 352 is a Spanish-built Junkers Ju 52.

Mission Accomplished. 17th May 1943, Sqn. Ldr. Frank (Jerry) Fray in his Spitfire PRXI of 542 Squadron operating out of RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, returned alone and unarmed to gather photographic evidence from 30,000 feet of the Mohne dam having been breached earlier the same day by 617 Squadron Lancaster bombers.

On August 17, 1936, Junkers-G 38 D-APIS Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg visited Croydon for the first time in five years. Also visible behind the mammoth airliner is a fine collection of 1930s transports - a pair of Rapides, a Junkers-Ju 52/3m, an H.P.42 and a Fokker F.VIIb-3m.
