NEGOTIATIONS TO REVIVE Ansett Airlines in Australia failed at the end of February 2002, and the airline ceased to exist. This has cast a cloud the over the future of Douglas DC-3 VH-ABR, which had been operated by the airline and its forebears since 1938. On March 10 VH-ABR appeared at the Albury air show in New South Wales for what could prove to be its last public appearance and was almost certainly the last public flight by an Ansett aircraft. The DC-3, named Kanana, was the third to arrive in Australia, being delivered in 1938 as part of Australia National Airlines' (ANA) original order for four machines.

BOURNEMOUTH-BASED South Coast Aviation has bought Soko P2 Kraguj G-SOKO from long-term owners Keen Air at Liverpool. The Yugoslavian counter-insurgency machine, the only example flying in Britain, flew to Hurn on March 21, 2002 and is now available for airshow, film and promotional work. The Kraguj first flew in 1966, and went into service in 1968. Some 30 of the Lycoming GSO-480-engined machines were built, serving for 22 years until retirement in 1990.

AT LELYSTAD AIRFIELD, 25 miles east of Amsterdam in Holland, the Early Bird Foundation is currently building a full-size, flying reproduction Fokker D VII. Many original components are being incorporated into the machine, including a 175 h.p. Mercedes engine dating from 1918, and a radiator and fuel tank donated to the project by the Dutch Air Force Museum at Soesterberg.

A MESSERSCHMITT Bf 108 Taifun and Bucker Jungmann which have been suspended from the ceiling of Terminal B at Zurich-Kloten Airport for more than 20 years are to be restored to flying condition. Both aircraft have been donated by the Swiss Government to the Lausanne-based West Swiss Trust for the Preservation of Historic Aircraft. The Taifun, A-201 (shown), is one of three Bf 108s preserved in Switzerland, A-209 being on display at the Swiss Air Force museum at Dubendorf, and A-210, which is also on the books of the Air Force Museum, being displayed at the Verkehrshaus Der Schweiz at Lucerne.

A REPRODUCTION OF THE Koolhoven FK.51 trainer, a biplane similar to the Avro Tutor and first flown in May 1935, is being built for the Dutch Military Aircraft Museum att Camp van Zeist, Soesterberg. The Friends of the Museum Foundation has established a fund for the project, and the heirs to the Koolhoven family, represented by H.J. Vermuelen, and other sponsors have agreed to provide some finance. The original FK.51 (seen here) was powered by a 350 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah, and a separate contract will cover the acquisition and restoration of a Cheetah and its accessories. The FK.51 served with the Dutch Air Force and Navy, and was also supplied to Spain.

THE WORLD’S SOLE SURVIVING Boeing 307 Stratoliner, NC19903, which flew again on July 11,2001, following a seven-year restoration by retired Boeing employees, was severely damaged when it ditched into Elliott Bay off Seattle following a loss of engine power at 1305hr local time on March 28, 2002. The Boeing is owned by the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum and was soon to be ferried to Washington for inclusion in the museum’s new building at Dulles Airport, due to open in December 2003.

The airliner had departed from Boeing Field, Seattle, at 1220hr on a crew proficiency and maintenance/systems check flight with two Boeing test pilots and two flight engineers aboard. It made a full-stop landing at Everett Paine Field but, soon after take-off. problems with the No 3 engine (which was shut down on the machine’s first flight on July 11, 2002) reportedly prompted the crew to decide to return straight to Boeing Field. When the port main undercarriage would not extend, the captain, test pilot Buzz Nelson, 60, circled until it was successfully hand-cranked down. Then a low fuel pressure light for the No 3 engine was noted, followed by a loss of power. The other three engines soon also lost power and the captain elected to ditch. All four crew escaped injury; NC19903 was recovered the next day to the Boeing factory at Seattle, where an investigation was begun.
